PVDF is a highly non-reactive, thermally stable, and piezoelectric fluoropolymer. It is used in a variety of applications due to its excellent properties such as corrosion resistance, electrical insulation, and high strength-to-weight ratio. The production of PVDF typically involves a suspension polymerization process where a monomer (vinylidene fluoride) is polymerized in an aqueous medium with the presence of an initiator and a surfactant. A horizontal agitated reactor provides the necessary mixing and heat transfer conditions for this process.
